Wood, vinyl and card infinity cube. Approx. 10cm x 10cm x 10cm

Te reo Māori is the language of Aotearoa. It's the song of our birds and mirrors the flow of our rivers. A single vowel is brimming with meaning and significance.

My interpretation of our arapū has been expressed through an infinity cube. Each side reflects a vowel, each turn blooms with drama, every panel fractures and rotates like the evolution of language and te ao hurihuri. Ko te arapū, te ara, e ake ake tonu atu.

A E I O U
A represents ascension, towards heaven and the future. I imagine new growth unfurling toward the sun.

E is used when describing action and movement. I've used a ngaru, a wave pattern, to symbolise forward motion, like the ripples left behind by a passing boat.

I evokes entering within, whether it's a place or a state of being. I imagine that it's like entering a dark cave, filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

O belongs to greatness, reminiscent of a seed descended from an ancient tree. The seed is filled with potential and legacy.

U dives into the depths, resting down in the belly of Papatūānuku. The vowel draws from the mauri beneath us.
